Project Overview :

JJR engaged by GBA Consulting Engineers to conduct an asphalt options analysis, including a preliminary asphalt mix design and a review of a proposed geometric design for the Birdsville Airport upgrade project.

JJR Involvement :

JJR’s expert team conducted the following:

  • Options analysis on the feasibility of using Dense Graded Asphalt (DGA) compared to Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA);
  • Preliminary asphalt mix design was undertaken based on the aggregate testing provided by the client and the Australian Flexible Pavement Association specifications; and
  • Review of the proposed geometric design in accordance with Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Manual of Standards (MoS) Part 139 and any Council specific requirements.

The client was provided with an Options Analysis Report, which included a Net Present Value (NPV) analysis of the estimated CAPEX and OPEX associated with each asphalt option. The report also included key findings of the options analysis, feasibility of asphalt mix, preliminary asphalt mix design recommended for testing, and recommendations for the proposed geometric design.
